Blomberg Washer Door Won't Open
If your Blomberg washer will not let you open the door, the machine is usually doing exactly what it should: it keeps the door locked while there is water in the drum, and for a few minutes after the cycle ends. When it stays locked longer than that, the cause is almost always one of four things: water that did not drain, the child lock, a worn door lock, or a broken handle catch.
- What it means
- The door lock is still engaged, usually because the machine detects water in the drum
- Check first
- Is there water behind the glass? Is the child lock on?
- Safe to force it?
- No. Forcing the handle breaks the catch and the lock
- Error code
- On many Blomberg models E01 points to the door lock

Why won't my Blomberg washer door open?
A Blomberg front loader locks the door at the start of the cycle and only releases it when it is sure the drum is safe to open. Blomberg's own manual says the door becomes ready to open a few minutes after the washing cycle ends, and the door-locked symbol keeps flashing until it is. While the machine still senses water in the drum, the lock stays on.
That is why a stuck door is so often a drain problem in disguise. If the machine could not pump the water out, it will not release the door, however many times you press the handle.
What keeps a Blomberg washer door locked?
| Cause | What you notice | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Water still in the drum | Water visible behind the glass; the cycle stopped before spinning | Clearing the pump filter or drain hose, or replacing the drain pump |
| Child lock on | Buttons do nothing; the child lock symbol is lit | Switching the child lock off as your manual describes |
| Cycle just finished | Door-locked symbol still flashing | Waiting a few minutes for the lock to release |
| Worn door lock | Drum empty, cycle finished, door still locked; often with E01 | Replacing the door lock |
| Broken handle or catch | The handle moves freely but the door does not open | Replacing the handle or the catch |
| Control board fault | The lock never releases and other functions misbehave | Diagnosing the board; the least common cause |
How to open a locked Blomberg washer door yourself
Quite a lot, as long as you never force the handle. Work through these in order:
- Switch the washer off, wait five minutes, switch it back on. The machine re-checks the drum and the lock often releases.
- Check the child lock. If the buttons do nothing, it is probably on. Your manual shows which buttons to hold to switch it off.
- If there is water in the drum, drain it through the pump filter. The filter sits behind a small cover at the bottom front. Lay down towels, put a low tray or baking dish in front of it, and unscrew the filter slowly anticlockwise. Expect more water than one tray holds. Some models also have a small emergency drain hose next to the filter.
- Clean the filter while it is out. Coins, hair clips and lint caught here are a common reason the machine did not drain in the first place.
- Look for an emergency release. Some models have a pull tab near the pump filter that releases the door. Its position varies by model, so check your manual, and use only a plastic tool, never metal.
Call a technician if the drum is empty and the cycle is finished but the door stays locked, if E01 keeps coming back, if the filter is clean and the machine still will not drain, or if the handle has broken.

Questions we get about Blomberg washer doors
Why won't my Blomberg washer door open after the cycle?
The lock releases a few minutes after the cycle ends, once the machine confirms the drum is safe to open. If water is still in the drum, or the door-locked symbol keeps flashing, the machine has not drained and the door will stay shut.
How do I open a Blomberg washer door that is stuck?
Switch the machine off and wait a few minutes, check that the child lock is off, then drain any water through the pump filter at the bottom front into a low container. Some models have an emergency release near that filter; its position varies by model, so check your manual. Never force the door handle.
What does E01 mean on a Blomberg washer?
On many Blomberg models E01 points to the door lock: the machine cannot confirm the door is closed and locked. The meaning can differ between models, so check the manual for yours.
How much does it cost to fix a Blomberg washer door lock?
Labour starts at $180. The part depends on what the diagnosis finds, so we price it once we know what failed. The $79 diagnostic is waived when you go ahead.
